South Africa
-South Africa was settled by the Dutch in the 1600s.
-The British took over colony in the early 1800s.
-By 1910 the British colony became the Union of South Africa.
-1912 – African National Congress was established to fight for the rights of black and “colored” people of South Africa.
-Racial segregation (separation) continued regarding where non-whites could live and travel, what jobs they could have and where they could go to school.
-1948 – Apartheid became official.
-1961 – White majority established an independent government from the British Empire.
-They declared themselves a republic to maintain the system of Apartheid.
-Nationalist movement did not achieve independence until it defeated the Apartheid system in 1994
Kenya
-1920 – Became a British Colony
-Blacks denied role in politics until 1944.
-1950s – a violent seven year uprising (war) occurred resulting in tens of thousands of deaths.
-Black participation began to increase and by 1963 Kenya finally became independent.
Nigeria
-1914 – Became a British Colony
-There was a peaceful nationalist movement that lead to independence between the years 1945 and 1960.
-Independence was achieved in 1960.
-There has been tension and violence among the ethnic groups due to unequal economic development during the colonial period by the British as well as religious differences.
